About Black Hills

This impressive mountain range running through South Dakota and Wyoming is home to many tourist attractions including Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Crazy Horse Memorial, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Custer State Park, Mammoth Site and Deadwood. The Black Hills have been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years and the first European explorers to observe the mountains were Francis and Louis-Joseph Verendrye in 1743. The area reportedly gets its name as the hill look dark from a distance because they are covering with so much vegetation. Black Hills' highest point is Harney Peak at 7,242 feet.
