Carlsbad Caverns National Park was created in 1978 and designated a national monument in 1973. Cowboy Jim White was the first to explore Carlsbad Caverns in 1898. The natural phenomenon is visited by more than 400,000 people per year and is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. The park has two national historic districts and its museum contains more than one million cultural relics.
