This towering cylindrical building was once the tallest building in Rome, and is still one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Castel Sant’Angelo, also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for he and his family and was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle. Today, Castel Sant’Angelo is a museum that houses an eclectic collection of paintings, sculpture, military memorabilia and medieval firearms.
