The 86,367-acre West Texas national park features the highest point in The Lone Star State with the 8,751-foot tall Guadalupe Peak and contains the Permian Era fossil formation of Capitan Reef. Guadalupe Mountains National Park was established in 1972 and some of its rock formations show evidence of human existence from more than 10,000 years ago. Notable park attractions are McKittrick Canyon, Dog Canyon, Frijole Ranch, Williams Ranch, Salt Basin Dunes, Pine Springs Visitors Center and the Butterfield Overland Mail stage station. The park also has 80 miles of trails.
