At the opening of the 19th century the hospice was opened in Guadalajara as a shelter for the disadvantaged, handicapped, elderly, and ill seeking care and treatment. Composed of a large open space, 106 rooms, 23 pateos, and a chapel dsigned by architect Manuel Tolsathat features murals and artwork by Jose Clemente Orozco. Established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1977, it serves today as the center for the Cabañas Cultural Institute and the Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
