Declared in 1980 by the Croatian government, the Kornati National Park hosts 109 islands, islets, and reefs in the northern part of Dalmatia. Within its boundaries the park protects 69 varieties of butterflies, ring-snakes, coral, sponges, and the rare Pinna nobilis mollusc. The majority of the park's land mass is devoted to the island of Kornat, which is easily accessible from the island of Murter and town of Murter, which manages the park.
