The Central California bay located in the Pacific Ocean was named Puerto de Monterey by Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602 after the ruler of New Spain. Monterey Canyon situated in the bay's center is one of the biggest underwater canyons in the world. Monterey Bay that consists of many government protected marine areas contains a wide array of sea life including seals, sea otters, whales, dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and fish. It extends from the cities of Monterey to Santa Cruz.
