Legend has it that if one had their hand in the mouth of this sculpted lie detector and told a fib it would be bitten off. La Bocca della Verità, the Mouth of Truth, is a marble image of a man-like face located in the portico of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, one of Rome’s oldest churches. Some speculate the Mouth of Truth was part of an ancient Roman fountain, while others think it was nothing more than a manhole cover. Whatever its origins, to this day throngs line up to test its lie-detecting abilities.
