One of the largest and most historically significant medieval buildings in all of Europe, the Palace of the Popes invites visitors to step back in time to experience the influence of the church and the architectural grandeur of medieval Gothic. Built in the mid-14th century under the leadership of Benedict XII and his successor Clement VI, the palace (also known as the Apostolic Palace) once served as the seat of the papacy. More than 25 rooms are available for viewing, including Saint John Chapel, the vaults of which are covered with frescoes painted under the direction of Matteo Giovannetti between 1346 and 1348.
