The Southwestern Florida city has many nicknames including "Western Gate to the Sunshine State," "World's Whitest Beaches," "Cradle of Naval Aviation," "America's First Settlement" and "Red Snapper Capital of the World." Pensacola was settled in 1559 by Spanish explorer Tristan de Luna y Arellano. The first Naval Air Station of the U.S. Navy opened in 1914 nearby and today also features the National Naval Aviation Museum. Other points of interest are The Vietnam Veteran's Wall South, T. T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum, William Dudley Chipley Obelisk, American National Bank Building, Fort Barrancas and Pensacola Lighthouse.
