The city of Salem is a residential and tourist area that was first settled in 1626. Salem had one of the most important Seaports in the U.S. and the settlement of Salem was led by both Roger Conant and John Endecott. Salem had many Puritans settle in Salem in search of religious freedom; but did not welcome other faiths therefore permitting laws issuing fines, banishment and imprisonment. Salem is well known for its history of witchcraft allegations. Salem's witchcraft history was documented into the play "The Crucible" written by the famous playwright Arthur Miller. Salem's history of witchcraft is still depicted in the city today with many witch-themed shops and attractions. One of Salem's elementary schools is named Witchcraft Heights Elementary School, Salem High School's athletic teams are named the Witches and police cars and badges have witches flying on brooms on the logo. Salem is also known as the birthplace of the U.S. National Guard.
