Just 6 miles northwest of San Cristobal rests Chamula, a largely autonomous community. The majority of the population is indigenous, dominated mostly by the Tzotzil ethnic group, and the city serves as the primary center for the Tzotzil maya religion. The church of St. Juan Bautista, a major site here, hosts a mixture of pre-Spanish religion and Catholicism.
