Recognizable by its famous Gateway Arch, the Missouri city situated on the Mississippi River is - like its famous arch - called the "Gateway to the West." St. Louis was sold to the United States in 1803 after years under French and Spanish rule. It was named after Louis IX of France and became an essential port after the Louisiana Purchase. Points of interest are the Gateway Arch, Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, Union Station, Forest Park and Missouri Botanical Garden.
