Home to the pre-Inca Uru people, the 42 Uros Floating Islands rest on Lake Titicaca and are constructed from totora reeds that are anchored the the lake floor with rope. The islands were originally constructed to protect the Uru people from attack, because the islands could be moved. The islands are maintained by the Uru people who add new reeds to the tops of the islands every 3 months to replace the reeds that rot away near the bottom of the islands.
