An ancient Maya city of the Classical Period, Uxmal is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture. Located in the Puuc region, it is one of the most representative of the Mayan cities' architectural style. Located in the Mexican state of Yucatan, Uxmal's major construction seems to date as far back as 850 to 925 A.D. The city of Uxmal is believed to have been founded about 500 A.D. and ruled for generations by the Xiu family.
